Trim mum behind bid to see the town become autism friendly

Efforts to make Trim an autism friendly town are gearing up with a launch event planned for later this week.

Trim Autism Friendly Town Committee (TAFT) is teaming up with the charity AsIAm this coming Friday, 1st March at the Swift Cultural Centre in Trim and anyone affected by autism are encouraged to attend.

The event is an informal meet and greet with the committee, you can learn more about their exciting project plans but also hear from Adam Harris, CEO AsIAm.

While in the Swift Cultural Centre, you will be welcome to pop next door to the Library and see the sensory magic table and toys that can be availed of there.

Chairperson Melissa Barwell said seeking official certification for Trim as an Autism Friendly Town has been a long term goal.

“We started the process last year by putting on the Children of the Stars Ball in Trim Castle Hotel which was a huge success and raised nearly €30,000 for AsIAM. More importantly it raised awareness in Trim of our autistic community,” Melissa said.

“I have fought hard over the years for my son, Lenny to get the services he needs which has been difficult,” he added.

“Our mission is to support and encourage people to understand Autism and create a more united community. We are working with several local businesses and reaching out to local schools to increase inclusivity and would like to extend an invitation to all local businesses to participate.

“We provide training for staff and practical support with the introduction of sensory equipment. We also support employers to gain a greater understanding of the benefits and importance of employing people with additional needs.”

Treasurer Maria Cowap added: “Melissa’s son, Lenny, my nephew, was my sole reason for getting involved in this project at the outset. I felt making Trim Autism Friendly could make such a difference to him.

“But the more work we do, the more I can see how many people’s lives can be improved by spreading awareness and our town becoming more inclusive. Most people are aware of autism generally at this point, our aim is to help them grow that awareness and make slight changes where they can.

“We are really excited to roll out some of the projects we already have in the pipeline, there may be an announcement or two at our launch”.

Secretary Aisling Dempsey said: “Community is at the core of my work as a councillor so I am proud to join Melissa and Maria on this journey. Inclusivity for all is important for me in my work but also as a mother. Melissa is a great advocate for Lenny, but as a community we can help her and so many others in her position.

“Many businesses and community groups already have autism friendly initiatives – Supervalu have their quiet hours, Trim Play Centre do a sensory session on Sundays Other businesses like Knightsbrook Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort have exciting plans to work in partnership with us on this initiative.

Our role as the committee is to work with businesses, make suggestions from as little as having a sensory box at the door to as big as having a sensory space.

“TAFT are so grateful for the support and encouragement received to date and look forward to seeing you on 1st March.

“Everyone is invited and welcome, TAFT would love to see local, autistic people attend; their parents and carers; residents and business representatives. It will take a little effort from all parts of the community to make this a success.”

Join Trim Autism Friendly Town Committee (TAFT) for coffee and cake between 10am-12pm. There is no charge but all donations are welcome.
