Treacy beats the best of british
Moynalvey runner Sara Treacy, who runs for Dunboyne AC in Ireland and Baldaro, Birchfield Harriers in England, produced a remarkable personal best performance to win the 3000m title at the British Athletics Indoor championships in Sheffield on Sunday.
Renowned as a formidable cross-country athlete and a leading hope for Ireland at Rio 2016 in the Steeplechase, Treacy pounced in the final lap to storm through for victory in a personal best time of 9:06.23 ahead of 21-year-old British sensation Emilia Gorecka.
Gorecka also recorded a new personal best, chasing Treacy hard in the closing 20 metres to take the top spot on the podium as the first Briton over the line in 9:06.27 to take the British title. Jessica Judd clinched silver whilst bronze went to last year’s winner Charlene Thomas.
Post-race interviews seen the best of British make their excuses after Treacy ran a 66-second last 400m, 23-second last 200 to take victory by .04 seconds from Edinburgh Cross-Country winner Gorecka.
Treacy’s winning time was six seconds faster than her 9:12 performance in the AAI Open Games two weeks ago.
A doctor based in Birmingham Treacy was part of the Irish team that clinched the bronze medal at the European Cross-Country Championships in Bulgaria in December for which she also won a Meath Chronicle / Cusack Group Sportsperson of the Month award.
Treacy will skip the Irish Nationals in Athlone next Sunday and will bid to run the European Indoor qualifying time of nine minutes at the Birmingham Grand prix on Saturday.
