Audi upgrades A6 for better economy

Audi has upgraded its top-end A6 saloon and Avant estate models ahead of the 2009 model year. Improvements include the introduction of new more efficient engines that give the brand a stronger foothold in the lower VRT tax category. First versions of these new models arrive in Ireland next week. Compared to their predecessors, fuel consumption has been cut by an average 12 per cent thanks to the introduction of latest common rail diesel technology. The entry level diesel engine is a new 2.0-litre TDi 136bhp model. With CO2 emissions of only 139g/km in its manual form, it places the A6 firmly within the lower VRT tax Band B with road tax of only €150 a year. Due here before November, prices begin at €42,100 before delivery charges, which is lower than the model that it replaces. This unit is also available with Multitronic transmission. Also new in manual and Multitronic versions is a 2.0-litre TDi 170bhp unit due here in January at a price beginning at €43,460. Expected to be one of main the volume sellers, this model falls solidly within the Band C €290 annual road tax category with CO2 emissions of 140g/km. Other diesel versions are a 2.7-litre TDi, 190bhp unit (also in manual and Multitronic) with lower emissions and a higher power output than the model it replaces. The new 3.0-litre TDi, 240bhp quattro (in manual and Tiptronic) is similarly equipped with a lower emissions/higher power balance. In petrol form, there is a new 2.8-litre FSI 190bhp unit, which replaces the former 2.4-litre version. There will be a new 2.8-litre FSI 220bhp unit and a new 3.0-litre TFSI 290bhp unit, which replaces the old 3.2-litre FSI version. The overall dimensions of the new A6 remain virtually unchanged. The styling improvements include changes to the front single frame grille, bumpers, air inlets, fog lights and the addition of fine trim strips on the lower body side combine to enhance its executive car appeal. A new generation MMI communication and entertainment system has also been introduced. Equipment levels have also been improved. Standard features now include Audi rear park assist system, cruise control and Isofix fittings for front and outer rear seats. Daytime running lights and rear LED lights are also standard. Other improvements see the introduction of five new colours and a new alloy wheel programme with new 17' alloys similar to those on A4 Sport versions. Future A6 saloon and Avant estates will be marketed in Standard and SE versions. In SE form, customers get Milano leather upholstery, seat heating, phone preparation, driver information system and chrome exterior. An optional Sport package will also be available which can be combined with both versions. This adds S-Line exterior features, 18' alloys, sports seats, three-spoke multifunction sport steering wheel and Xenon headlight with LED daytime running lights.
