Crucial league win for Navan
This was a very significant victory for Navan in the Leinster League Div 1 defeating last season"s champions Cill Dara away from home on Sunday. The Kildare men were still smarting following defeat by Boyne a week before and this was a game they had to win if they were to stay in contention at the top of the table. Navan meanwhile had a 100 per cent record to maintain so the scene was set for a bruising encounter. Navan got going after 18 minutes when Thomas Clarke intercepted a Cill Dara pass outside their 22-metre line, the ball eventually worked its way to centre Ronan Conaty who touched down under the posts. Navan out-half Ryan Roberts converted. For the rest of the half play was concentrated in midfield with Cill Dara putting Navan under a lot of pressure however, the Navan defence stood firm for a 7-0 interval lead. Early in the second-half Cill Dara scored from a pushover try in the left corner. With Paul Feeney getting a second yellow card Navan were reduced to 14 men for the remainder of the half and it looked as if the momentum was with Cill Dara, but Navan were not about to relinquish their lead and in the 66th minute Roberts put Navan further ahead with a penalty kick in front of the posts. Conscious that there was still only one score between the teams, Navan increased the pressure and their superior fitness paid dividends when Conaty went over for his second try, Roberts converted.
