Call to open new Navan link road
A call for the new road linking the Athboy and Kells roads in Navan to be opened as soon as possible to relieve gridlock in the town has been made by local county councillor, Tommy Reilly. 'I am calling on the council to open this link road on a temporary basis as soon as possible to alleviate the disastrous traffic congestion,' he said. Cllr Reilly pointed out that there were several roads into the town closed due to roadworks. 'The Commons to Robinstown Road, the Gainstown Road, the Borallion and the Casey"s Cross to Hayestown Road are closed off, making it next to impossible for anyone to get into Navan,' he said. 'There is gridlock in the town because of those closures and it is hard enough getting people into the town to shop without this. We will not get people into town if this continues,' he added. 'I am pleading with the management of Navan Town Council and Meath County Council to ensure this issue is resolved immediately. 'The opening of the new road would allow access to the town of Navan during this lead-up to Christmas. We do not need to encourage shoppers to avoid the town or opt for spending their money in other towns or across the border,' said Cllr Reilly. The opening of the link road would also relieve an awful lot of pressure on Boreen Keel, which is regularly jammed with lorries that have no other way of crossing the town, he went on. A spokesperson for Meath County Council said that works involving road closures in the Navan area will be completed this week, with the exception of the Borallion which is linked to the construction of the M3 motorway. He said significant progress had been made on the completion of the Kells Road-Athboy Road link, but at this point it was not possible to give a firm commitment on an opening date.
