Defendant remanded in custody pending trial in assault case

A MAN who denies charges of assault, causing harm, and producing a blade in the course of a dispute, has been sent forward for trial to Trim Circuit Court.

The defendant, who is now 18 but was 17 at the time of the incident, is pleading not guilty to the offences, which allegedly occurred at an address at Claremont, Navan, in April of this year.

After hearing at Navan Court that the defendant could not offer a fixed address, Judge John Brophy said he would have to remand him in custody.

Defence solicitor, Mr Raymond Finnegan, said the only address the defendant could give was the family in Navan with which he was residing.

"Don't even suggest that to me. With all due respect, there are so many criminals living at that address, I could fill cells with them. Without a fixed address, there is nothing I can do for him," said Judge Brophy.

The court heard the book of evidence had been served in the case and Judge Brophy sent the defendant forward for trial to Trim Circuit Court sitting on 5th February next.

"If he comes up with a fixed abode, I'll review bail," said Judge Brophy as he remanded the defendant  in custody.
