Athboy launches Tidy "09 calendar
Athboy Tidy Towns Committee launched its 2009 calendar on Friday last when the local public representative, Cllr Liz McCormack, Meath County Council Cathaoirleach, did the honours. Priced at €5 and featuring many scenes from around the town, it makes an ideal Christmas gift for those from Athboy living in other places. It is now available in local shops. In spite of the town being under 'sewerage-works siege', the Tidy Towns group is very happy with its results in various competitions in the past year. These include gaining five extra marks in the national Tidy Towns and being placed third in County Meath, as well as winning the Baile Beag le Gaeilge Award. In Meath County Council"s Pride Of Place Awards, Athboy was first placed in centres with 1,001-2,000 population. The Best Youth Award was to Athboy No Name Club, and Meadowlands was third in the best estates judges" awards. Highfield was third in best overall Meath estates. Coille Dios was second in category C of the Meath Local Authority Estates Awards. Mary Flood, chairperson of Athboy Tidy Towns, made an appeal for support as they work to make Athboy a better place to live, work and visit. One can help by becoming a member, with meetings held monthly on the second Wednesday of the month at Old Darnley Lodge Hotel at 8.30pm; sponsoring a race or buying a ticket for the annual fundraising greyhound race night at Mullingar on 19th February next; and keeping the areas outside homes and businesses weed and litter free. The group acknowledges, with gratitude, all who help in any way.
