Keep business in town and town will stay in business

Dear sir- I write to your newspaper in total support of recent campaigns by Navan Chamber of Commerce and businesses to shop local this Christmas. Indeed, in current advertisements by my company, I have started to use the slogan 'keep your business in town and keep your town in business'. I now feel it is time to extend this slogan to read keep your business in this country and keep this country in business. While it loathes me to suggest that Newry and Belfast are not in this country, at this moment in time, the fact remains that every euro and cent/pound and penny spent in the towns of Northern Ireland results in taxes being paid to the British Exchequer. Our workers, particularly in the retail/manufacturing sector, must realise that spending their wages across the border is not without consequence either now or in the future - they may well be spending their way out of employment. I appeal to you to support your employer, support your job and encourage your family and friends to support you by shopping local this Christmas. Yours, Adrian O"Donnell, Abbey Road, Navan.
