Kells road safety figure honoured by RSA

A former garda who now spends much of her time advising young school-goers of the importance of staying safe on the roads has received an award for her work at the Road Safety Authority"s (RSA) first ever Leading Lights Road Safety Awards. Aileen Ferguson, secretary of the Kells Road Races, was among a number of members of the public honoured for their work in road safety at a ceremony in Farmleigh just before. The awards recognise and honour the outstanding efforts of people from community groups, companies, industry groups and schools nationwide to improve safety on Irish roads. Speaking at the awards ceremony, Gay Byrne, chairman of the Road Safety Authority, said: 'What people may not know is that in every community across Ireland, there are ordinary people doing extraordinary work, quietly but tirelessly working to reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads. These are the unsung heroes of road safety. And it gives me great pride and honour to be able to thank them personally for their outstanding achievements.' The RSA presented a total of nine Leading Lights Road Safety Awards, including a Supreme Award and a Posthumous Award.
