Cutbacks mean Trim set to 'loos" its public toilets
The public toilets in Trim have been closed by Trim Town Council, which has cited budgetary considerations as a reason for the closure. Trim had been one of the few towns left in the county with public toilets and the facility was considered to be convenient for those waiting at the nearby bus stop or visiting Trim Castle. Members of the public are now being asked to use the toilet facilities in the nearby Trim Tourist Office. The public toilets had been open from 8am to 5pm, seven days per week. Bathroom facilities are now available to the public in the adjacent Trim Tourist Office which is open from 9.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Trim Town Engineer Vincent Collins explained that the decision to close the toilets was for budgetary reasons. He added that the toilets were 'not well-minded by the people' and that maintaining them was costing more than it was worth. The toilets were opened and closed each day by a caretaker who also repaired anything, such as fittings, that were damaged. Mr Collins said the general consensus was that the toilets weren"t terribly effective for use and they 'weren"t favoured by a a lot of people'. He added that they had also been subjected to vandalism and that a fire had been lit in the toilets some weeks ago, which had caused damage. Local town councillor Ray Butler said some people who had heard the town"s public toilets were going to close had been to see him and were not happy with the situation. He said councillors had not voted on closing the toilets yet and that nothing had been finalised. He added they would be going back into discussions with the town council and taking it from there.
