Matthews goes for gold again

Fresh from his exploits in winning the men"s senior event at the Meath Cross-Country Championships a few weeks ago Robbie Matthews will look to continue his good form on the provincial front on Sunday. Matthews leads the Meath team at the Leinster Cross-Country Championships at Tymon Park, Dublin. The Dunshaughlin AC runner will be joined on the team by club colleague Paddy Mangan. The other members of the team include Mark Hoey, who was second in the Meath Cross-Country Championships and Rory McDonnell who secured third position. The biggest representation is from Bohermeen AC who have four members selected. Na Fianna"s Mary Hanley is expected to feature prominently in the women"s event. She is one of three Na Fianna athletes on the Meath team along with Maggie Higgins and Brigid Clarke. Hanley didn"t take part in the women"s race at Meath Cross-Country Championships which was won by Shauna Moore (Dunshaughlin). Moore, however, is not included on the Meath team for Sunday"s race. The Meath teams selected for the Leinster Cross-Country Championships are: Senior men - Robbie Matthews, Paddy Mangan (Dunshaughlin); Mark Hoey (Star of the Sea); Rory McDonnell (Dunboyne); Morgan McDonagh, Sean Kinnane, Phelim Glynn (Dunboyne); Declan Monaghan (Fr Murphy); Dermot Farrelly, Derek Croal, Richard Byrne, Shane Boyle (Bohermeen); Aidan Bailey (Clonliffe); Gerard Heery, Fechin Heery (St Brigid"s). Senior ladies - Linda Fahy, Ursula Byrne (Dunshaughlin), Mary Hanley, Maggie Higgins, Brigid Clarke (Na Fianna); Orla Timmons (Star of the Sea), Aoife Brady, Crona Brady, Lucy Darcy (Sportsworld); Fiona Mahon (Donore); Linda Gunning, Geraldine Gill (Bohermeen), Mary Watters, Breda Clifford (Navan); Fiona Reid (Dunboyne). Junior men - Ciaran McKenna (Star of the Sea); Loughlin Campion (St Andrew"s); Thomas O"Reilly (St Brigid"s); Cian O Connor, Ian Hunter (Ratoath); Dara Rennicks, Darren Vahey (Bohermeen); Nick Hoey, Turloch Grant (Navan); Graham Connor (Na Fianna). Navan AC"s Mary Watters finished second in the o-45 category at the BHAA South Dublin Co Council Cross-Country Championships at Tymon Park on Saturday. Navan also came third in the team event and were represented by Watters, Hazel Scorer and Marie Reilly. Earlier in the month Watters was first in her age category at the Tom Brennan Memorial 5km event at the Phoenix Park.
