Scurlogstown Olympiad honours leading lights
Two men who have been involved with Scurlogstown Olympiad since its foundation over four decades ago, were honoured by the group at a recent testimonial evening. Galtrim native Tom Byrne, and Trim solicitor, Michael A Regan, originally from Rathmolyon, were honoured for their work with the Olympiad at a function in Trim Golf Club. Tom Byrne"s role as chairman of the Olympiad"s scythe cutting committee has ensured the prominence the competition holds on the national stage today, the citation to the Galtrim farmer said. He has given his talents to local GAA clubs and did his parish proud in promoting the field of sport. 'Steeped in the traditions of his native Galtrim, dating back to the time of the first eskers, he is an authority on the history and folklore of that historic area. A lifelong member of the IFA, he showed great leadership and courage in highlighting the many or the problems affecting the family farm,' the tribute continued. Michael Regan was the Olympiad"s first PRO, and ensured that the festival was brought onto the national stage as he turned the spotlight onto the medieval banquets and historical pageants. In later years, he became a sponsor and promoter of the annual haymaking event. Seamus ' Druma was the bilingual MC for the tribute night, with Mattie Kerrigan outlining the careers of both recipients, describing their contributions to the movement as immeasurable. A collage of photographs of the two were presented to them by Hugh Goulding, and their wives, Nancy Byrne and Marie Regan, received bouquets from Iris and Bernie Sturdy. Music was provided by Trim CCE and Liam Ryan, and a number of other contributions. Meanwhile, there was a large attendance at the Olympiad"s annual meeting held in Jack Quinn"s Lounge.
