Extension planned for Trim SuperValu

Plans to extend Nally"s SuperValu supermarket at Haggard Street, Trim, have been lodged with Trim Town Council. Express Checkout (Trim) is seeking permission to part demolish and carry out alterations to its existing premises as well as constructing a two-storey extension of 845.5 sq metres. The application also seeks permission for associated signage, a totem sign and to alter the layout of the existing car park and entrance off Haggard Street and form a new entrance off the access road to Griffin Park with associated site works. The application was lodged on 3rd April and a decision is due on the development on 28th May next. Trim SuperValu manager Stephen Nally said they had looked into getting land at the back of the site to extend but that this was a 'no-go' as it is a heritage site. He said they do not have extra space and will be using some space in the back yard and the existing trolley bay to widen the first aisle in the supermarket and that they will also be reconfiguring the shop. Mr Nally said there had been rumours that they were building a multi-storey car park but this is not the case. The extension is quiet small, he added. He also explained that the exit of the car park is currently very near the junction of Haggard Street and Griffin Park and they felt this was a bit dangerous. Thus SuperValu plans to move the exit a little further in so it"s not so close to the junction. Mr Nally said that, because they are reducing the size of the back yard, they will only take deliveries before 10.30am. Currently, deliveries are taken all day and it will be a further advantage to the area if all deliveries are before 10.30am, added Mr Nally. Nally"s SuperValu was to be the anchor tenant in the proposed new town centre in Trim but pulled out of the contract some months ago. Mr Nally said that once they decided that they weren"t going to move to the town centre, they made the decision to do some work at their existing site. If they get planning permission for the development, Mr Nally said they would be looking to start work on the project early in 2010. Meanwhile, plans for the new town centre in Trim have since completely fallen through after the developer Bennett Construction also withdrew from its contract with Trim Town Council and Meath County Council to build the development, which included an anchor supermarket, retail units, offices and apartments at Townspark South, Trim.
