Rath Cairn students learn about Black and Tans

Historian Michael ' Fearaigh recently visited Coláiste Pobail Rath Chairn, where he viewed projects by the second-year history class on the Black and Tans. He has published three books on the topic: 'Sligo 1919-1921: A Chronicle of Conflict", 'Killoran and Coolaney: A Local History", and 'The Aftermath of Revolution: 1921-1923". The latter was completed by Mr ' Fearaigh as part of his doctorate at Trinity College, Dublin. He was very impressed by the students and the high standard of work contained in their projects. The class was enthralled by his talk on the War of Independence, in particular by the account of 26th September 1920 when Trim was left in ruins by the Black and Tans. Nine of the 11 students in the class live in Trim. Mr ' Fearaigh"s son, Oisín ' Fearaigh, teaches English, religion and mathematics at the school.
