'Register fiasco" in Kells estate
A number of tenants in private houses in a Kells estate have discovered they are not on the register of electors, but their landlords are! Cllr Brian Collins has called for an investigation into what he calls a 'registration fiasco' in the Glebe Estate in Kells. According to Cllr Collins, several residents are not registered while the actual owners of the houses, in many cases people who bought investment properties but who are not resident there, have been registered instead. He described it as a bizarre situation. 'Registering property owners who are already registered elsewhere is not what was required,' he said. He called for an investigation into what he described as a possible breach of the Data Protection Act. 'The council needs to investigate this matter,' he added. 'In the meantime, dozens of people who should have been registered have not been registered. The political parties have made every effort to ensure people were made aware as to whether they were on the register or not, but the simple fact is that double registration has occurred and this whole mess needs to be the subject of an internal review by the council,' he added. Meath County Council could not be contacted for comment on the matter.
