June award for Johnny Murtagh

Bohermeen"s Johnny Murtagh is the winner of the Meath Chronicle / Cusack Hotels sports personality-of-the-month award for June. June was a glorious month for the Meath man as he won the Irish derby for the third time on board Aidan O"Brien"s Fame and Glory at the Curragh on Sunday. That win followed his success on board Yeats in the Ascot Gold Cup and despite missing the last two days of the festival Murtagh was crowned top jockey for the second successive year with four winners. Murtagh"s other Ascot winners were Mastercraftsman, Spacious and Forgotten Voice. Local artist Seamus Cassidy will produce the monthly awards and the overall awards in the main category and subsidiary categories which will include outstanding achievement, young sportsperson and hall of fame. 2009 monthly winners: January - Joanna Morgan; February - Stephen Clynch. March - Barry Geraghty / Paddy Carr. April - Brad Harris.
