Recent deaths 04-07-09

The death occurred recently of Mr Miceál Markey, Lobinstown, Navan, a founder member of the 'Rathkenny Revels", in his 83rd year. Mr Markey lived in his homely cottage affectionately known as 'Number 2 Pleasant Terrace". He always had a warm welcome for any visitor, and always had a kettle on the boil for a 'ceili" and jovial conversation. An accomplished musician, he played the accordion and loved ceili music. Deceased spent his working life as an insurance representative for Irish Life and was also known as an agent for Singer sewing machines with his business partner, Joe Rafter. They had their shop in Metges Lane, Navan. When transport was scarce, Mr Markey carried many passengers to and from Navan. On occasion the journey home from Navan might involve a detour for sewing machines to be delivered to households all over Co Meath. A wonderful conversationalist, the journey always seemed short with him. Mr Markey was one of the founder members of Stackallen Rathkenny Musical Society, better known as Rathkenny Revels. He rounded up and gathered talent from the locality and ferried them safely to and from rehearsals and shows. He was very active in the society as chairman, PRO and was elected as honorary president of the society. He was also one of the friendly faces that greeted patrons as they collected their tickets at the Revels" box office, and even found time to appear on stage on rare occasions. A life long pioneer Mr Markey was presented with the Fr James Cullen Medal in recognition of his 60 years as a pioneer, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Deceased had a wonderful gift of being able to put pen to paper and compose an appropriate speech for a nervous groom or anxious father of the bride. He was a wonderful MC and gave a lot of his time to charity functions. He was a member of Muintir na Tire, loved reading the local newspapers and was an avid follower of current affairs. The last surviving member of the Markey household, he was pre-deceased in 1993 by his nephew Jimmy Carry. For the past couple of years he had being residing with Jimmy"s wife, Margaret and his grandniece, Yvonne and grandnephew, Shay. Mr Markey"s funeral took place on 2nd June in The Church of the Holy Cross, Lobinstown, followed by burial in Killary cemetery. _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ Catherine Cronley, Kinnegad Much sadness over a wide area was occasioned by the passing of Mrs Catherine Cronley (nee Lynch), St Martin"s, Rossan, Kinnegad, on 19th June last. Mrs Cronley was a native of Beauparc, Navan, and was a homemaker. She had a large involvement in charity work for Our Lady"s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, and St Mary"s School, Delvin. She also loved Meath football. Deceased is survied by her husband, Joe; sons, Jonathan, Joe and Martin, all Rossan, Kinnegad; sisters, Rita Giltrap, Leixlip, and Thereaa McGauley, Termonfeckin, Co Louth; brothers, Jim Lynch, Beauparc, Navan; Patsy Lynch, Birmingham, England, and grandchildren, Lauren, Leah and Jessica. Her remains were removed to Kinnegad Church and burial took place following the funeral Mass to Clonard Cemetery. _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ Kathleen Cunningham, Navan The regretted death has occurred at Our Lady"s Hospital, Navan, of Mrs Kathleen (Catherine) Cunningham (nee Newman), Claremont Estate, Navan. A native of Claremont, Mrs Cunningham was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Deceased is survived by her husband, Patrick; sons, John, Joseph, Jim, Paul, David, Christopher and Eamonn; daughters, Carol Gilligan, Sandra Tufrey and Deborah Cunningham; sons-in-law and daughters-in-law; sister, Mary Farnan; brothers, Christy Newman and Thomas Newman; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and grandchildren. The funeral took place from St Mary"s Church, Navan, to St Mary"s Cemetery, Navan. _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ Kathleen Hilliard, Drogheda & Navan Much sadness was occasioned by the recent death of Mrs Kathleen Hilliard (nee Kane), Colpe Road, Drogheda, which occurred on 8th June last at her residence. Mrs Hilliard (84) was a native of Balreask, Trim, Road, Navan. She was predeceased by her husband, Ben, in 2003 and her daughter, Marie McArdle, Sydney, Australia, in 1996. Deceased is survived by daughters, Mrs Kathleen Byrne, Wheaton Hall, Drogheda, and Mrs Patricia Sheeran, Colpe, Drogheda; sons, Dermot and Vincent, Colpe, Drogheda, and Colm, Piltown, Drogheda. The funeral took place from the Star of the Sea Church to Reilig Mhuire Cemetery, Piltown. _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ Ellen Cassidy, Kilbeg The recent death of Mrs Ellen Cassidy, Horath Cottage, Kilbeg, Kells, has occurred at the age of 89. She was originally a member of the Carpenter family of Staholmog and was predeceased by her husband, Peter Cassidy, in March 2000. Deceased is survived by her sons, Jimmy, Peter and Oliver, Kilbeg; Gerard, Arthurstown; Ambrose, Armagh; Padraig, Ardbraccan, and Dermot, Dublin; daughters, Margaret, England; Helen, Kilbeg; Claire, Dublin, and Anne, England; daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her remains were removed to Kilbeg Church and the funeral took place after Mass there to Kilbeg Cemetery.
