What"s on the box this week?

'The Best Job In The World" (BBC 1, Thursday) - It"s the job that dreams are made of: sandy beaches, year-round sunshine, free luxury accommodation and a £70,000 salary for six months" work as the caretaker of a beautiful Barrier Reef island. In January 2009, Queensland Tourist Board set up a marketing campaign amidst a blaze of global publicity. The search for the right candidate began via its website, with a competitive three-month selection process for the once-in-a-lifetime job. There were 35,000 applicants from across the world, and this documentary follows the fortunes of four young British candidates who made it through to the final 50. Among the group, too, was Bettystown resident George Karellas, who make it to the final. The programme witnesses the emotional highs and lows of the four young British men and women as they try to sell themselves to the public by any means necessary. With crucial votes and vital attention at stake, one of them ultimately beats their rivals to the dream job, but which one? Each week two businesses, whose fate hangs precariously in the balance, must persuade Gerry that they"re potentially profitable before he makes his big decision: which, if any, of the businesses should he invest in? In the first episode of this new series, his quest takes him into the lives of two couples - both of whom have built award-winning breweries, but are now equally desperate for his cash. One couple have created a beer voted 'The World"s Best", but they"ve been forced to mortgage their dream home and have already started to make redundancies. 'UR SO V4IN" (Channel 4, Friday) - This quirky documentary explores the world of personalised car number plates and some of the people who spend thousands to own the right combination of numbers and letters, among them several people called Nigel who crave the same ultimate number plate - 'N1GEL". Directed by Ellena Wood, the programme reveals that, for each of these Nigels, plates are more than a strip of acrylic. They"re a prized possession, a spark of individuality in a world of faceless conformity, and most importantly, a status symbol. Retired satellite communications engineer, Nigel Mills (48), the proud owner of the perfect Nigel number plate, 'N1GEL", originally missed out on buying it at auction when it sold for £78,000. Years later, with much deeper pockets, he bought 'N1GEL" for almost £80,000 in a private deal. It is now estimated to be worth around £100,000. Like Nigel Mills, Nigel Walker (53), the owner of 'N2GEL", attended the original auction of 'N1GEL" and missed out. A modest accountant from Nottingham, he settled on 'N2GEL", costing around £700. Over 10 years later, 'N2GEL" is now reported to be worth around £50,000. 'Fresh From The Sea" (RTE 1, Tuesday) - In this new series, the emphasis is on food from the sea as top food writer Clodagh McKenna travels from Donegal to Waterford and from Galway to Dublin to meet some of the fishermen, fish farmers and fish processors who are responsible for producing some of the most highly-prized seafood in the world. As with her previous series, 'Fresh From The Farmers" Markets", McKenna concentrates on the small-scale fishermen and producers, rather than the large corporations. In each of the seven programmes, Clodagh visits a top seafood restaurant to cook a dish using one of the programme"s featured species. As well as all the delicious food she sources in 'Fresh From The Sea", she also visits people and organisations who are part of Ireland"s maritime community, including the Valentia Lifeboat, the Dunmore East Coastguard unit and Sikorsky helicopter, the Malin Head weather station, Liam and Martin Wylie, boat builders from Cork; Oliver and Sean O"Driscoll, fish stall owners and champion fish-filleters, and Bobby Nash, an artist who creates 3D pictures from nautical charts.
