Bryan Dobson steps up to launch Kells Pink Ribbon Walk

RTE newsreader Bryan Dobson has lent his support to the inaugural Kells Pink Ribbon Walk, which will take place in September. The 10k event will raise money for Action Breast Cancer and will take place on 12th September around the recently opened and scenic Girley Bog eco-route. 'I"m delighted to be involved, with this very worthwhile event,' said Mr Dobson, official ambassador for the walk. 'The Kells Pink Ribbon Walk is a very dramatic expression of hundreds of women coming together to make a statement of solidarity and concern for one another, while at the same time having fun and raising money for a great cause.' Action Breast Cancer (ABC), a programme of the Irish Cancer Society, is Ireland"s leading provider of breast cancer information and support. Each year, it reaches over 25,000 women. Its support systems include a national phone helpline, patient grants, counselling services and a breast awareness education programme. 'It"s very important to look at all the consequences of a cancer diagnosis, not just for the actual patient, but also for their families, who will need ongoing support, too,' said Mr Dobson. 'This is where the many services provided by Action Breast Cancer have such a valuable role.' On behalf of ABC, Naomi Fitzgibbon of the Irish Cancer Society said: 'We are thrilled that the very first Kells Pink Ribbon Walk has been organised. There are, on average, 2,200 new cases of breast cancer in Ireland every year, so it is very important that groups like this help raise vital funds, enabling Irish scientists to find new therapies to prevent breast cancer, better techniques to diagnose it accurately and, ultimately, new treatments which will cure it.' Kells & District Chamber of Commerce is a major supporter of the inaugural Pink Ribbon Walk. The walk is the brainchild of a small committee of local volunteers, some of whom have been directly affected by breast cancer. 'This event has been very professionally organised and I think that it could set the template for future Pink Ribbon Walks all over Ireland,' commented Mr Dobson. 'I would actively encourage people to sign up and get involved. Every cent raised in sponsorship money by the walkers will go directly to Action Breast Cancer.' The walk will be officially launched tomorrow (Thursday). It will take place on 12th September. For information, telephone (046) 924 0055 or (087) 984 4724.
