Action Breast Cancer walk launched

ALMOST 200 people celebrated the launch of the Kells Pink Ribbon Walk at a well-attended summer luncheon last week. Hostess Carol Mallon then cut a pink ribbon to officially launch the 10km Walk, which is set to take place on 12th September. 'We are hoping to have over 500 women and men join in the fun of walking or running the 10 kilometres through the grounds of Drewstown House and around the beautiful Girley Bog Eco route,' said Jess Olohan, president of Kells Chamber of Commerce. 'We"re delighted to be associated with Action Breast Cancer and thank them sincerely for their assistance in organising our inaugural Kells Pink Ribbon Walk.' 'As a Chamber, we see the success of this event as being two-fold; firstly we hope to raise a significant amount of money for a wonderful charity, and secondly, we hope that the event will put the Girley Bog Eco Walk and Kells 'on the map" as a destination for walking enthusiasts.' Guests at the luncheon enjoyed musical entertainment and a sumptuous buffet and were then invited to bid on some highly unusual auction prizes, including a VIP balloon ride for two people, donated by Joe Leahy. Speakers at the event included Ian O"Reilly, community fundraiser for Action Breast Cancer; consultant surgeon, Finbar Lennon; Olivia Duff, of the Kells Pink Ribbon Walk Committee; Carol Mallon, and Jess Olohan, president of the Kells and District Chamber of Commerce The Pink Ribbon Committee would like to extend sincere thanks to all the local businesses that generously donated food, beverages, and raffle and auction prizes for the event. The Kells Pink Ribbon Walk has been organised by a small group of local women, some of whom are survivors of breast cancer. There is an entry fee of €20 to register for the walk, which will cover administration, insurance, health and safety, and other costs. All participants will receive an artist-designed commemorative t-shirt and a race pack with sponsorship form and event information, as well as a medal when they cross the finish line. There are also plans for plenty of post-race entertainment, including a barbecue and live music. All sponsorship monies raised by walkers will go directly to Action Breast Cancer. To participate, download an entry form from the website. Alternatively, email info@kellspinkribbonwalk.ie or phone (087) 984 4724 and a form will be posted out.
