Green light for Kells Community House
The new Community House at Carrick Street, Kells, could be up and running by the end of next year, Kells Town Councillors were told on Monday night. Planners have given the go-ahead for work on the facility, which includes the demolition of an existing extension to the rear of the house and the construction of a new extension with a toilet block and lobby, as well as the construction of separate meeting rooms in the rear garden and the refurbishment of the existing building. Councillors heard a recommendation from planners that the development proceed and that all works be carried out in accordance with conservation guidelines and that all groundworks be conducted under the supervision of a qualified archaeologist. Cllr Brian Collins welcomed the proposed facility and said people were lining up to use it. Cllr Tommy Grimes also welcomed the facility, but asked if parking facilities could be provided. Cllr Oliver Sweeney also asked if anything could be done regarding parking while Cllr Sean Drew wanted to know if the site would be fully secure. Cllr Bryan Reilly said it was important to get the facility up and running and not let the issue of parking delay it. Area manager Brendan McGrath, said they were not considering any additional parking due to the cost and they didn't want to annoy their neighbours. He pointed out that within 200 yards there was ample parking space. He told the councillors there would be up-to-the minute security systems in place and it would be open to any bona fide group looking for meeting facilities. He hoped that work could get started in the New Year and the facility would be up and running by the end of next year.
