Ratoath RFC booming

Those behind Ratoath Rugby Club are continuing to build for the future and youngsters from the area interested in taking up the oval-ball game are encouraged to join. As part of their recruitment drive Ratoath RFC recently organised that the famous Heineken Cup would be displayed to children from various schools in the area including Ratoath NS, St Paul's, Rathbeggan and Dunshaughlin CS. There were plenty of blue flags in evidence as the youngsters came out in force to mark Leinster's achievement in winning one of the most prized pieces of silverware in world rugby. "There was a huge level of anticipation amongst the children and to actually see the Heineken Cup made for one of the best days of the year in terms of grassroots rugby," said Ratoath RFC vice-president David Marrinan who brought the trophy to the various schools. "It was truly an inspirational moment for all of our players and many of our youngsters have aspirations to emulate the success of the current Leinster squad and continue the great tradition of sporting excellence in the county." Ratoath RFC is one of the fastest growing rugby clubs in the country. From modest beginnings in 2004, the club has increased its membership to over 300 children and young adults ranging in age from seven to 19 and a coaching staff of 20. There is also a hard-working committee tasked with promoting the sport in local schools. The club is based at a five-acre site with a full-sized pitch, floodlit training area, dressing rooms, toilets, committee room with parking for 50 cars and a new state-of-the-art pitch in the Jamestown Sports Campus. "There is an active TAG competition every Wednesday. The club has a number of high profile honorary members including international greats such as Reggie Corrigan, Denis Hickie, Philippe Sella, Malcolm O'Kelly, Trevor Brennan, Paul Wallace and Brent Pope," added club PRO James Finglas. Ratoath u-19s were beaten by Suttonians at the weekend. For further information visit: www.ratoathrugby.ie or contact the PRO at (087) 2790614.
