A new St Vincent de Paul (SVP) conference (branch) in Dunboyne has "hit the ground running", according to its president, Carol O'Flaherty. "We have found ourselves extremely busy in the current economic climate," added Ms O'Flaherty, who expressed satisfaction at the response to a social evening to launch the SVP initiative in the area. The event, which highlighted the work of the society, attracted a large attendance to the local St Peter's GAA Club. Those present included SVP national vice-president, John Monaghan, and Oriel Regional Council president, Michael O'Keeffe, Crossakiel, Kells, both of whom addressed the gathering. Ms O'Flaherty said there has been a number of follow-up inquiries and they are confident of increasing membership. The launch occasion featured the distribution of spot prizes and slide show presentation by Pat and Olivia Murphy, who told their unique story of how they spent nine years sailing around the world.
