Trim's first Christmas market draws large crowds to the town
Trim Chamber of Commerce's first Christmas Market and festivities over the weekend drew huge crowds to the town and the Christmas spirit was certainly awakened with everyone enjoying the atmosphere of the old-style food and craft market. Santa arrived by Garda escort in a magical sleigh on Saturday evening and as he moved through the town with friends Spongebob, Scooby Doo, Minnie Mouse, Bob the Builder, Tigger, his elves and local donkeys, he stopped traffic and met with all the children along the way. As Santa arrived on Market Street, a countdown was performed and he turned on the Christmas lights to rapturous applause. Children and parents queued then to see the man himself and reports are that all children in Trim will receive a visit this Christmas Eve. Santa kicked off events again on Sunday when he arrived once again with his friends into the town centre where Market Street was closed for the day to facilitate the market. Shoppers found most of the shops on Market Street open for business as well as 40 market stalls, some from as far away as Galway and Cork, displaying an array of food and crafts. Many local businesses that are not located on Market Street also took a stall to support the event. Face-painters and live music entertained the crowds. Kathy Crinion, Maria Butterly, St Mary's School Choir and traditional Irish music were just some of the line-up on the day and if visitors to the town didn't know the familiar faces of Willie Fay and Ray Butler, they certainly know their voices now as they both compered on events throughout the day. The weekend was a huge success and Trim Chamber has thanked everyone who helped out and volunteered in any shape or form. Santa will be in his grotto (formally Daybreak/Centra) on Saturday 12th and Saturday 19th December and Sunday 20th December from 12 noon to 5pm for all to visit. Trim Chamber of Commerce is encouraging people to shop local this Christmas and to 'Treasure Trim'.
