What's On the Box this week?

'Cougar Town' (RTE 2, Monday 9pm) - While most women in their 20s go through life experiencing the challenges and often humorous pitfalls of meeting men, Jules - played by Courtney Cox - took on the responsibilities of marriage and raising a son. Now in her 40s, she embarks on a journey to self-discovery whilst surrounded by fellow divorcees and singletons eager to live or re-live a time gone by. Along for the journey are her friends and family: Laurie, the younger, feisty co-worker who encourages her to get out there and have some fun; Ellie, the sarcastic, unapologetic confidante content with her life and marriage to her average, but loveable husband, Andy; and ex-husband Bobby, a classic under-achiever who'll test her patience as they attempt to raise their teenage son. Sounds like the perfect comedy vehicle for Cox's mature talents. ____________________________________________________________ 'Health Of The Nation '(RTE 1, Wednesday 8.30pm) - Enlisting the help of Dublin-based GP Dr Nina Byrnes, Dr Mark Hamilton travels around Ireland with a mobile surgery giving a snapshot of the different types of concerns and ailments that are affecting the health of the nation. Filmed in Sligo, Cork, Limerick, Naas, Waterford, Dundalk, Galway and Longford, the doctors meet people who need advice about a huge range of medical conditions, including fungal infections, bad backs, irritating coughs and aches and pains of all sorts. They're in a different town every week and in each programme they focus on a particular health issue that has local relevance but is of universal concern. In the first programme, filmed in Sligo, patients visiting the mobile clinic include a fatigued child, a woman with a cholesterol problem and a man with a mysterious rash. The programme also focuses on Ireland's biggest killer - heart disease. Mark Hamilton organises a public walk to highlight the importance of a healthy heart and the Sligo County Darts Team are challenged to improve their lifestyles. _____________________________________________________________ Glenn Martin DDS (Sky One, Thursday 9.30pm) - The long-awaited popular US stop-motion animated series finally arrives, the first television series to come from Michael Einser's Tornante Animation. The primetime comedy features an all-star voice-over cast that includes Kevin Nealon as Glenn Martin, and Catherine O'Hara. Glenn is the well-meaning but clueless dentist dad, wife Jackie is both cynical and supportive, teenage son Conor is entering that awkward, hormonal phase, while 11-year-old Courtney is a budding CEO with a slavish personal assistant, Wendy, already in tow. Then there's the quirky dog, Canine. Together, they leave suburbia behind as they travel America in Glenn's toothbrush-topped mobile dental surgery, encountering the many twists and turns of life on the road. _____________________________________________________________ 'New Directors: UFO' (RTE 2, Monday 11.30pm) - The town of Boyle, Co Roscommon, which has a population of approximately 2,500, was the location of a mysterious crash in 1996 which many people believed to be a UFO. Since then it has become a UFO hotspot. This event inspired a local woman, Betty Myler, to form the 'Western UFO Society' which has since developed into the UFO Society of Ireland. 'UFO' is a personal journey that finds director Pete Higgins exploring the much-publicised UFO activity in the town where he grew up. The documentary is an open-minded glimpse into the notion of belief and scepticism in a small community. _____________________________________________________________ Movie Of The Week: 'City Of God' (Ch4, Saturday 12.40am) - Fernando Meirelles' award-winning film centres on the poor of Rio de Janeiro and the armed gangs who run riot, seen through the eyes and camera of Rocket. Over two decades, Rocket witnesses the rise of his peers from children to men and the escalation of the violence as he, distanced but emotionally involved, charts their lives. Taken from a fact-based novel by Paul Lins, this is a stunning, violent yet compelling insight into Brazil's underbelly.
