Latest Aldi store set to open in Navan this week
Navan consumers are set to benefit from increased choice with the opening of the Aldi discount foodstore at Brews Hill tomorrow (Thursday). The new Aldi store spans a total of 1,135 square metres and also includes 111 parking spaces on a site of 0.64 hectares at Brews Hill. It is Aldi's third store in Meath, with the German-owned chain already operating stores in Ashbourne and Kells. Aldi has not yet confirmed the number of jobs created by the opening of the new Navan store. The development is located on land that was part of the Navan O'Mahonys GFC grounds fronting onto Brews Hill after the club took the decision to sell part of its holding to the German retailer. Navan O'Mahonys intends to develop a training facility at Knockumber and Robinrath. A planning application by the club to develop four sand-based pitches on a 7.39 hectares site was granted permission by Meath County Council but is currently under appeal to Bord Pleanala. To mark the opening of their Navan store, Aldi plans a wide range of special opening offers at the Navan store, including a PC for €699.99, a 19" LCD TV and DVD Combi for €189.99, digital camera for €99.99, a four-person tent for €89.99, a playhouse with sandpit for €129.99, and a pop-up gazebo for €69.99. Aldi has said it is committed to providing Irish consumers with a top-quality own label grocery offerings at very competitive prices. The new store will sell a core range of approximately 1,000 own label lines across a wide spectrum of products, including fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh meat and poultry, baked goods, milk and dairy, wines and beers, cosmetics, toiletries and household supplies. In addition to Aldi's core range, there will be a constant flow of one off 'special buys' available each Thursday and Sunday at discounts to the marketplace. These 'specials buys' will include electrical items, gardening, household goods and textiles. Aldi has said that it is committed to growing Aldi's Irish supply base and increasing the number or Irish products available throughout its Irish stores, with 40 per cent of all grocery sales at Aldi on products bought from Irish suppliers, producers and manufacturers. All of its fresh meats, fresh poultry, eggs, bread, water, flour, and many of its teas, coffees, soft drinks and snacks come from leading Irish suppliers. Local suppliers from Meath include Largo Foods, which supplies many of Aldi's crisps and snacks. Navan was one of the last towns in the region to be served by a discount foodstore until Lidl, another German retailer, opened its store at the Trim Road in Navan earlier this year. Trim and Ashbourne have had discount foodstores for several years. A previous planning application by Aldi to develop a store at the Navan Retail Park at Knockumber was refused planning permission and this decision was upheld by an Bord Pleanala.
