RTE newscaster Bryan Dobson and model Pippa O'Connor help launch this year's Kells Pink Ribbon Walk at the weekend.

Kells starts planning for 2010 Pink Ribbon Walk

The second Kells Pink Ribbon Walk in aid of Action Breast Cancer will take place on Saturday 11th September. The First Pink Ribbon Walk, which took place in Kells last September, attracted over 600 walkers to the area. Model Pippa O'Connor and RTE broadcaster Bryan Dobson officially announced this year's event at the weekend. Mr Dobson is the official ambassador for the Kells Pink Ribbon Walk. "I'm delighted to be involved - and proud to have been invited on board for this very worthwhile event. I would actively encourage people to sign up and get involved," he said. Pink Ribbon Walk committee chairperson Penny McGowan said: "So far, we have two Pink Ribbon Walks planned for 2010, in Killaloe and Kells, but eventually, we would like to hold a Pink Ribbon walk in every county in Ireland and organise a national Pink Ribbon Walk Day. Our fundraising target for 2010 is €200,000 and all monies raised will be channelled into Action Breast Cancer to provide advice, support and information for women and men diagnosed with breast cancer and to fund breast cancer research." The first Pink Ribbon Walk, which took place last September in Kells, was organised by a group of volunteers from Kells and attracted over 600 walkers. The walk raised €100,000 for Action Breast Cancer and was the largest single fundraising event for the Irish Cancer Society in 2009. Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society, is Ireland's leading provider of breast cancer information and support. Each year, it reaches over 25,000 women who are concerned about breast cancer and breast health. Kells and District Chamber of Commerce is a supporter of the Pink Ribbon Walk and will be looking after all the organisation and administration. The September event in Kells will include a 10k run at 2.45pm, followed by the walk at 3pm. For further information, phone (046) 924 0055 or (087) 984 4724 or email info@pinkribbonwalk.ie.
