Victim Martin O'Gorman.

Second post mortem on body of Navan assault victim

A second post mortem examination is to be carried out this week on the body of 63-year-old Athlone man, Martin O'Gorman, who died a week after being assaulted in Navan in the early hours of 21st June. It is expected that Mr O'Gorman's body will be released to his family by the end of this week, once the second examination has taken place. Three males arrested in connection with the Garda investigation into Mr O'Gorman's death were released without charge last week and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The second post mortem has been requested by solicitors representing some of those arrested, who are seeking an independent assessment of Mr O'Gorman's body. On Wednesday morning of last week, a 16-year-old male and an 18-year-old male were arrested and questioned in Navan and Kells Garda Stations by officers investigating Mr O'Gorman's death. They were released the next day without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP. On Thursday of last week, a third person was arrested in connection with the investigation. The 19-year-old male was held for questioning in Kells Garda Station and was released later that day without charge. A file is also being prepared for the DPP in this case. It is understood that further arrests are expected to be made once Gardai have other enquiries they are making finalised. Last week, Gardai issued a fresh appeal last week for information but it is understood that no new information has come to light following the appeal. Gardai were anxious to speak to a number of people seen on CCTV in the area. These include a male cycling a bicycle along Academy Street in the direction of the Dublin Road at around 12.20am. This male cyclist was wearing dark clothing with a hood up and had white stripes on his trousers/tracksuit bottoms. He was also wearing runners. Gardai also wish to speak to the driver of a black VW Golf, or similar-type car, travelling along Academy Street towards the Dublin Road at around 00.20am and the driver of a saloon car, which cannot be better described, travelling towards the town around 00.30am. Gardai have studied extensive CCTV footage in the area and all other movements in the area have been identified. Even if these people did not see anything at the time, Gardai would like them to get in touch so they can rule them out as witnesses. On Sunday 20th June, Mr O'Gorman, who was an avid Meath GAA supporter from his time as a student at Gormanston College, drove to Navan in a grey VW Passat from his Athlone home to celebrate Meath's victory over Laois earlier in the day. It is believed that he went for three drinks in the town - two in Bermingham's pub and one in Brady's. Tragically, he was found outside a row of bungalows lying between two cars next to the kerb by a local taxi driver later that night at around 12.35am. It is thought he had been walking towards the 24-hour Maxol garage on the Dublin Road when he passed a group of people on Academy Street who attacked him. Another local taxi driver came to the scene around the same time and an ambulance was called. The victim was rushed by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, before being transferred to Dublin's Beaumont Hospital, where he died on Sunday 27th June, a week after the assault.
