Fine displays of breeds at annual Royal Meath Show
Large crowds flocked to Trim's Porchfields on Sunday for the 70th Royal Meath Agricultural Show, where there were magnificent displays in all sections, for visitors both old and new. While dark clouds threatened for much of the day, the rain at least held off for the afternoon. From the red and white of the Herefords to the black of the Aberdeen Angus, and all the other cattle breeds, the cattle area was a fine display of the best from loyal local exhibitors. The preparation area for cattle was a hive of activity from early morning, as animals were prepared to look their best to parade before the judges. Next to the cattle was a large display of goats in a large variety of sizes and colours, from cream to dark brown, looking beautiful with their long ears and large brown eyes. Sheep are a regular feature on display at the Royal Meath Agricultural Show, and were well represented again this year - from old breeds like Suffolk, with their large black heads, to modern breeds like Vendeens, with their high quality wool. A trip up the hill at the Porchfields was well worth the effort to admire the fantastic display of horses of all sizes, which competed in several different disciplines, from being lead to show jumping. A walk back through the trade stands gave visitors a feast for the senses, where all sorts of goodies were available to buy, from delicious cakes and jams, to chocolate and coffee. A large marquee housed the home industries section where a mouth-watering array of home cooking awaited visitors in this area. From the door, a feast of colour was to be seen, enticing any visitor to walk around and view everything closely. For those looking for a bit more action, a visit to the pony mounted games was worth a stop, with kids holding on as their ponies raced around the obstacle course. The committee has thanked all who turned up on Sunday, as exhibitors, spectators or helpers. The committee also thanked all the emergency services which provide an excellent service and are an important part of running an event like this show. They have also thanked all the sponsors, also an essential part of running the annual show.
