Political unity needed on hospital
Dear sir - I fully support Dr Sean McGrath's contention that Navan hospital has being unfairly targeted by the HSE for closure despite it being efficient and having gold standards of elective surgery. I also commend him for standing up for the benefit of others against this full frontal attack of the HSE on Navan Hospital. The closure of any hospital or conversion into a polyclinic is a serious concern for any urban or rural community. The life support of Navan Hospital for the past quarter of a century has being its surgical facilities, expert surgeons and multidisciplinary theatre teams. What is at stake is of vital importance to the future generations of Navan town and its hinterland. For Minister Harney to be allowed play Russian roulette with our families' lives with the step-by-step closure of Navan Hospital is breathtaking. To prune Navan Hospitals established elective surgical set up from the Irish hospital system would have the immediate ramifications where serious accident victims from Tara Mines or Navan Racecourse would not have an emergency service. Thus, such victims unfortunately would no doubt, suffer needlessly and possibly die needlessly. Do we leave seriously injured road traffic victims to die on the side of the road also? There can be no compromise here and people of Meath need to embrace themselves against the closure of Navan hospital and unite across the political spectrum. Yours, Gerard O'Brien, Whistlemount, Kells Road, Navan.
