Nobber 10k race to raise funds for national school

The annual Tom Flynn Memorial 10km Race takes place this coming Sunday, 19th December, at 12 noon. This is the second year the event will be held and proceeds raised will go towards the Nobber Primary School parents' association and to the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. The route will be the same as last year's event and will begin at Nobber Fire Station, and will take in the Possextown Road, out towards Rolagh Bridge and on to the Cregg Road, before looping back to the school. The race last year was organised by Louise Flynn in memory of her husband, Tom. Mr Flynn passed away in December 2006 and the memorial race marks the anniversary of his passing. A secondary school teacher in Kells Community College, he was an active member of Nobber Primary School parents' association and was widely known in the GAA community, both in his native Cavan and in Meath. The parents' association and teacher Ronan McGahan assisted in organising the event. A total of 170 runners and walkers took part in the 10km road race around Nobber village last year and they raised over €8,600 which went towards the development of a 400 square metre infant playground in the school. Additional funding was provided by Nobber Vintage Club which donated €2,000 from the proceeds of its Fair Day, held last May. Last September, the parents' association announced the opening of the play area. Louise Flynn said: “The event is open to runners from all over the country, regardless of their ability. People are also invited to walk in the event. Last year, we had over 170 runners and walkers and this year we are hoping to surpass that number.†Sponsorship cards are available from members of the association. Registration is on the morning of the event from 10.30am onwards. It costs €20 for adults to enter and €10 for students.
