Oldcastle group to revive ancient festival
Businesses in Oldcastle are preparing for a boost the weekend after next from a tourism initiative undertaken by local company, Beyond the Blarney. There has been substantial interest shown in a 'New Beginnings' weekend to mark the ancient Celtic festival of Imbolc. The weekend will take its inspiration from Imbolc and invites visitors to seek out seeds of creativity and to start thinking and planning for the new year ahead. Taking the themes of 'Nature', 'Nurture' and 'Create', the weekend includes a guided walk through Europe's largest beech forest with a professional botanist, visits to the headquarters of Sheridan's Cheesemongers and a chance to shop at their weekly artisan food producers market; workshops in photography, creative writing and art and nourishment for the body with a optional sessions in reflexology and massage. Beyong The Blarney has put together a weekend package which includes accommodation at the Fincourt Hotel, a choice of two creative workshops and all transport to and from the hotel and to all locations. Imbolc marks the centre point of the dark half of the year. Following the darkness of midwinter, it was the season to prepare for growth and renewal. It is believed that one of the cairns at nearby Loughcrew is aligned with the sun at sunrise at Imbolc. Beyond the Blarney is a tour company specialising in cultural and historical tours, events and workshops. The company, established in March last year, is based in Oldcastle, and aims to bring clients 'beyond the blarney' – beyond the Ireland of shillelaghs and shamrocks and to provide an authentic experience of Ireland in the 21st century.
