Nobber students run to raise €2,240 for Aware

A total of €2,240 has been raised by students of O'Carolan College, Nobber, who took part in the Aware 10km Run, which raises money for the organisation which helps people who suffer from depression. Fifth and sixth year students from O'Carolan College completed the 10km event, which was held in the Phoenix Park in January. It was due to be held before Christmas but, due to the terrible weather at the time, it was rescheduled for last month. Teacher in O'Carolan College, Patricia Tighe, said the students had already raised €940 in registration fees for Aware before they did the run. They collected a further €1,300 in sponsorship, making the total they raised for the organisation €2,240. The students who participated were: Ruth Fitzsimons, Ross O'Shea, Adam Farrelly, Marie Thompson, Gillian Curtis, Shauna Geraghty, Laura Plunkett, Justine Stafford, Megan Rooney, Leigh Anne Halpin, Amy Corcoran, Emma Finney, Sarah Van Zanten, Wayne McConnell, David Plunkett, Dualta " Fionnagáin, Jamie Byrne, Niall Yorke, Abbie Everard, David Clarke, Brona Shields, Robert Duffy, Darrell O'Brien, Sarah-Jane Keogan, Nickeal Casserly, Alice Smyth, Robert Carroll, Kayleigh Purfield, Dean Curtis, Philip Cassidy, Colm Yorke, Nicola Lynch, Lisa McManus, Nicole Curtis, David Lanney, Rachel McManus, Louise Corcoran and David Donagh. Teachers taking part were: Ms Kelly McCormack, Ms Helena Tierney and Ms Patricia Tighe. The Aware Christmas 10k Run is one of Aware's major fundraising events that help to highlight the work of this voluntary organisation. Each participant paid a registration fee of €20 and each student raised money in their local area through sponsorship cards. Aware provides support for people with depression, bipolar disorder, post-natal depression or suicidal thoughts. About 400,000 different people suffer from depression in Ireland at any one time but many hide their condition and never get help. Sadly, over 500 people take their own lives each year. The school will make a presentation of the money raised to Aware on Friday 11th March when representatives of the organisation will travel to the school to give a talk to all fifth and sixth year students.
