Navan teacher's phonics DVD aids Scoil Mhuire pupils
Scoil Mhuire, Navan, launched its own very successful phonics DVD last Thursday. The DVD, 'Simple as ABC Phonics', was created and developed by learning support teacher, Mrs Kathleen Nee, and she was on hand to demonstrate it to all the junior and senior infants parents, along with many other invited guests, last week. Mrs Nee has worked tirelessly on the scheme for many years and finally saw her hard work come to fruition on Thursday. She explained to all gathered why she had decided to make her own scheme and how it has worked with huge success for children throughout the school. Simple as ABC Phonics takes cognisance of the many learning styles which are present in every classroom. The visual learner enjoys the beautiful artwork of each individual letter, the auditory learner loves the stories associated with each letter and the tactile learner rises to the challenge of manipulating the letters to make and create full words and sentences. The DVD is an attractive, eye-catching scheme for approaching the teaching of phonics. For parents, it is a valuable tool for practising with their child at home and reinforcing the work carried out in school. All in all, a win-win situation for all the partners in education. Scoil Mhuire is justifiably proud of Mrs Nee and her work throughout her career, culminating in the launch of 'Simple as ABC Phonics'. The DVD was launched by Mrs Bernadette McHugh, director of the Navan Education Centre. Mrs McHugh was delighted that the centre was associated with such an exciting educational tool and has invited Mrs Nee to facilitate courses for teachers in the Education Centre in the autumn.
