Dunshaughlin to unveil heritage trail
Dunshaughlin's new Heritage Trail will be officially launched this coming Sunday, 15th May, at 3pm at Dunshaughlin Library. The heritage trail is a tour of 17 sites and locations of historical significance, each marked with a plaque giving a brief history. It includes such sites as a Norman motte, a crannóg, a workhouse, and the local Church of Ireland church which has stone carvings dating back to the 6th or 7th century. The new heritage trail is the result of 12 months of hard work by Dunshaughlin & District Historical Society and Dunshaughlin Tidy Town committee with the support of the Meath Leader programme. After the official opening of the Heritage Trail at 3pm, there will be a short guided tour of some of the trail by well-known local historian Michael Kenny. This will be followed by refreshments and music in St Patrick's Hall. A booklet detailing the heritage trail will be on sale in Dunshaughlin Library. "Having a heritage trail in Dunshaughlin is of great benefit to our community," said John Holland, chairperson of Dunshaughlin Tidy Town committee. "It acknowledges and celebrates the history of our village and its significance in our daily lives. Furthermore, visitors to the area will find a walk around our village a pleasant and informative activity."
