The funeral takes place in Navan today of Mrs Elizabeth (Lily) Carberry, who celebrated her 100th birthday just over a month ago, at Millbury Nursing Home. Mrs Carberry, of Newline, Bohermeen, and formerly of St Mary's Park in the town, marked her centenary with family and friends on 10th June, when Geraldine Doherty of Meath ladies senior football team presented her with the President's letter. A native of Wilkinstown, deceased was born Lily Curran, to parents Frank and Mary. She was one of a family of four girls and a boy, and her father worked on the farm, pub and general store at Tiernan's of Wilkinstown. After completing her education, she worked in a number of places before finding long-term employment in the Club Hotel on Bridge Street, later the Russell and now the Newgrange. While working there, she met her future husband, Peter Carberry, from Macetown, who also worked in the hotel. Among those who joined Mrs Carberry on her 100th birthday last month was Sr Therese Mullen from Mullingar, a member of the Mullen family who ran the hotel at the time. As far back as 1946, Mrs Carberry could recall cycling to Croke Park with her late husband - she was football mad and attended almost every All-Ireland final that Meath played in. They were wed in 1946 and from 1952, lived in St Mary's Park in the town. They had a family of two - Margaret Clogher, who lives in Bohermeen, and Frank, a former Fianna Fail town councillor in Navan. Peter Carberry died in 1987, and Mrs Carberry moved to Bohermeen in 2000, living with Margaret for nine years until she became the first resident in Millbury Nursing Home just over 15 months ago. Geraldine Doherty, who presented the centenarian with the President's cheque, plays for St Ultan's and was a neighbour in Bohermeen. Predeceased by Peter, she is survived by her son, Frank; daughter, Margaret; son-in-law, Liam; daughter-in-law, Jean; grandchildren, Keith and Louise; great grandson, Adam, nephew, nieces, relatives and friends. The funeral takes place in St Mary's Church, Navan, at 10am today (Wednesday) followed by burial in St Mary's Cemetery. ____________________________________________________________ David McConnell, Moynalty The untimely death of Mr David McConnell, Bellair, Moynalty, Kells, was the source of widespread sadness. Aged 35, he died at Newmarket Street, Kells, on 30th June last. Mr McConnell was a plasterer. He is survived by his mother, Eileen McConnell, Moynalty; sisters, Glena McConnell, Kells and Regina McConnell, Moynalty; brother, Darren Boyle, Kells; son, Eoin; and Eoin's mother, Lorraine, Nobber; nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. The funeral took place from the Church of the Assumption, Moynalty, to the local cemetery. ____________________________________________________________ Hannah Fagan, Summerhill The regretted death occurred on 28th June last of Mrs Hannah Fagan, Agher Hill, Summerhill, at Beaufort House, Navan, at the age of 93. Mrs Fagan was formerly O'Brien, and was a native of Rangue, Killorglin, Co Kerry. She was wife of the late Paud Fagan, who died in June 2006. Deceased moved from Kerry to Meath with her husband in 1950. A keen follower of the Kerry football team, she was never afraid to fly the Kerry flag. She suffered polio in the mid 1950s, but her faith saw her through it. She was very fond of knitting and played bingo for many years. Mrs Fagan is survived by her sons, Denis and Eddie, both Agher Hill; brother, Charlie O'Brien, Rangue, Killorglin; Anne O'Brien, Caragh Lake, Killorglin; relatives and friends. The funeral took place from the Church of the Assumption, Coole, to the adjoining cemetery. ____________________________________________________________ Tony Heeney, Carnaross There was widespread death following the passing on 5th July last of Mr Tony Heeney, Castlepole, Carnaross, Kells, at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan. He is survived by his wife, Roseanne; daughter, Sharon; son-in-law, Packie; grandchildren, Eanna, Blaithin, Beibhin; brothers, Joe, and Shaun; sisters, Marie, Olivia and Regina; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. The funeral Mass took place in St Kieran's Church, Carnaross, with burial in St Colmcille's Cemetery, Kells. A month's memory Mass takes place in Carnaross on Sunday 31st July, at 11.15am. ____________________________________________________________ Ellen Burke, Kilcloon Mrs Ellen (Nell) Burke (nee Fahy), Pagestown, Kilcloon, who died on 9th July last, was a native of Galway. Aged 92, she passed away at the Mater Hospital, Dublin. Wife of the late Luke Burke, who died in February 1979, she was also predeceased by her daughter, Mary Clare. She is survived by her family, Celia, Nora, Chrissie, and Martin; sons-in-law; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sister; brothers; sisters-in-law; brother-in-law; nieces; nephews and friends. The funeral took place from St Oliver Plunkett's Church, Kilcloon, to Batterstown Cemetery. ____________________________________________________________ Tommy Meehan, Dunsany and Mayo The death has occurred of Mr Tommy Meehan, Culleen, Kilsallagh, Westport, Co Mayo, and formerly of Belper, Tara, following an illness. A native of Cabra, Mr Meehan lived at Belper Cross with his family for many years, and was very active in the local community, particularly when his young family was growing up. He was very involved in running the local youth club in Dunsany Hall, and used his handyman skills to make stages and sets for various nativity plays and stage productions being put on by the local schoolchildren. He had a great love of music, particularly The Beatles. Deceased worked for a period at Corballis with the Boyce family, and his wife, Nellie, was involved in the Dunsany ICA guild and worked at Royal Tara Golf Club in Bellinter. When their eldest son, Paul, a chef, moved to Westport to work, the rest of the family moved to Mayo some years afterwards. He is survived by his wife, Nellie; sons, Paul and Andrew; daughter, Roseanne, extended family; relatives and friends. A service of remembrance took place on Monday in Glasnevin Crematorium, Dublin. Donations, if desired, can be made to Mayo/Roscommon Hospice or The Lodge, Cancer Care West, Galway. ____________________________________________________________ William Sheridan, Kells The death occurred, following a short illness, of Mr William (Willie) Sheridan, Normanstown, Kells, at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan. Mr Sheridan will be remembered as a quiet and kind gentleman who had a great love of nature and the land. He also had a particular love of Gaelic games and followed the Meath team very closely. Deceased was a noted gardener who had been head gardener in the Headfort Estate, where he cared for the estate with great attention and became an expert on all types of flowers, plants and vegetables. He continued to show the same interest in his own large garden until he fell ill in recent times. In his homily at the funeral Mass in Mullaghea Chruch, Monsignor John Hanly, PP, Carnaross, spoke of Mr Sheridan as a man who lived a very simple life with no worldly ambitions but a love for his work, respect for his family and friends, and most of all his faithfulness to his prayer life and his Church. He said that the community will feel his absence as they have lost a very faithful gentleman. During the funeral Mass gifts were taken to the altar representing aspects of deceased's life and the readings and prayers were read by relatives. He was laid to rest in the family grave in St Colmcille's Cemetery, Kells. He is survived by a large circle of cousins and close friends. ____________________________________________________________ Magdalene Garvey, Navan The former taoiseach and leader of Fine Gael, John Bruton, Dunboyne, has paid tribute to Magdalene (Meg) Garvey of Navan, who died on Tuesday 12th July. He said: "I wish to pay tribute to the memory of the late Meg Garvey of Navan, who died last week. A native of Flower Hill, she was the secretary of the Meath County Executive of Fine Gael when I first became involved with Fine Gael in 1966 and for many years thereafter. She discharged the heavy responsibilities of that post for 14 years, with great efficiency. She was totally devoted to the cause of the party right up to her death. I extend heartfelt sympathy to her family." Ms Garvey, of Silverlawn, Navan, passed away peacefully at her niece, Gretta's residence, Dunmoe, Navan. Her funeral took place from St Mary's Church, Navan to St Mary's Cemetery. Donations to Palliative Care. ____________________________________________________________ Ellen Sherrard O'Hagan, Drogheda and Australia The death occurred on Wednesday of last week of Mrs Ellen Mary (Eily) Sherrard O'Hagan, mother of Ashbourne-based singer Sean Sherrard, better known as Johnny Logan. Mrs Sherrard O'Hagan (nee Gargan) was wife of the late tenor, Pat O'Hagan (Charles Sherrard), and died in Surfer's Paradise, Queensland, Australia. The family ran the popular Drogheda pub, The Coachmans on West Street, for many years in the 1970s and eighties. She is survived by her family, Michael, Seán, Eamonn and Fiona; sister Lucy, brother Philip; niece Miggie; grandchildren; sisters-in-law; brother-in-law; daughters-in-law, Ailis and Colette; son-in-law, Tony; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many friends in Ireland and Australia. The funeral will take place in Surfer's Paradise.
