Top 10 for Kourosh Foroughi
Star Of The Sea athlete Kourosh Foroughi (DCU) finished ninth in the high jump final with a leap of 2.18 metres at the World University Games in China today. The DCU student bypassed jumpers from the likes of the Ukraine, Italy and USA, but his best jump was the previous day's semi-finals when he equalled his PB of 2.20 metres. Temperatures soared to over 35 degrees Celcius in Shenzhen but that didn't hinder the performance of 20km Race Walkers Brendan Boyce and Micheál Doyle. Boyce originally hails from Donegal and finished the race with a final time of 1:29:48 which will serve as the groundwork for his attempt at Olympic qualification in the 50km in September. Meath man Micheál Doyle (Tara AC) followed suit by finishing strong with a time of 1:32:48. Doyle expressed his delight for both his teammate and the support they have received. "It's great to be here at the Games and I am really happy with how well Race Walking has done," said Doyle. "Both Brendan and myself have a lot of support which is what you need to be able to finish such a mentally and physically challenging event." In other events Amy Foster (UUJ) advanced to the 200m semi-finals after a superb second place finish and new PB of 23.53. Sprinter Brian Gregan (DCU) set a new personal best (PB) in the 400m final after finishing with a time of 45.96. Gregan placed fifth overall in the event which saw three separate finalists set new personal PBs alongside the DCU student. "I wasn't feeling my best today but came out focused and set a new personal best so I am really happy with that," said Gregan. "I ran as hard as I could and to be with three other guys who also set PBs is a race to be proud of." In swimming, Ryan Harrison (University of Tennessee) narrowly missed a bronze medal by a hundredth of a second in the 200m Freestyle final. Although Harrison clocked in at 1:49.18 to secure fifth position in the event, the Donegal resident expressed his disappointment in the result. "To not get a medal on such a narrow margin is disappointing," said Harrison, "I really wanted that third position but I raced hard so I can be happy with that." The Women's Medley Relay team placed seventh overall after finishing on a time of 4:13.48 in the 4 x 100m final. Aisling Cooney (UCD), Fiona Doyle (Calgary), Lorna Cummins (Loughborough) and Bethany Carson (UUJ) managed to set a new PB in the event by 1.5 seconds. The Men's Golf side showed improvement today after round two at Mission Hills Golf Club. The four member team improved on the previous day's score by seven shots with Kelan McDonagh (NUI Maynooth) boasting an 11 shot improvement at level par. On the Women's side, Lucy Simpson (NUI Maynooth) shot seven over par at 79. Golf action continues tomorrow for Round 3. Finally, in Taekwondo, Niamh Buffini scored a 7.31 in the Women's Poomsae Individual Preliminary. Unfortunately the score wasn't enough for the ITT student to advance to the semi-finals.
