Moynalty adds more marks to come top of TT pile...again!
Moynalty is once again the top tidy town in the county...for the 17th year running. The hard-working committee of Moynalty Tidy Towns put in another huge effort this year and finished top of the pile in Meath with a whopping 306 points, just four points off the overall winners for the country, Killarney, who finished with 310. The Moynalty team's incredible record was even more impressive this year as they added a further three points to their tally and Moynalty Tidy Town committee chairman Peter Rogers said it could have been more. "Well, absolutely we're delighted but I thought we might even have had a few more marks, to be honest, but it's the judges who make the decisions. Overall, I'm very happy we retained our Gold Medal," he said. "It's our 17th time and that is down to the hard work of the committee members who keep at the grindstone year in, year out, and we are only a few marks off the overall winners so that's a great achievement. "I thought the tidiness category, that we only got one extra mark there, was slightly disappointing considering the undergrounding of cables, which was a big, big job. To just get one mark, that was a slight disappointment, but that is just my own thinking," he said. "There's a huge effort across the county and it's not just about Moynalty. Trim put in a huge effort and there was talk of them for a gold, but they ended up with a bronze, which is disappointing, and I felt for them after all their efforts." Mr Rogers said the group was pleased with the litter control and overall approach categories. Trim town clerk Brian Murphy said the town was happy to end up with a Bronze Medal for the fourth year in a row but that the committee could have expected more. "It's great to hold onto it, but there were areas like roads, streets and back areas that we felt we improved. The Navan Road, for example, has been completely resurfaced, Watergate Street and Dublin Road, where the cables have been put underground, so we're a little disappointed not to get more. "We lost a mark in litter control but were up two in landscaping and gained a mark in residential," he said. At 288 for this year, which is up two from 2010s results, the town clerk said the huge effort of the local committee deserved recognition. "It's still an improvement, which is great, but the work the committee puts in deserved more," he added.
