Plan needed before Kells Cross can be restored to town centre
Kells Town Council is to hold a meeting to discuss the implemenation of a traffic management plan for the town, with a view to ensuring the return of the town's Market Cross to the centre of Kells. At a meeting of the council last week, councillors agreed with a motion from Cllr Conor Ferguson that they hold a meeting to discuss the implementation of the plan, which is funded by the council. The meeting had received a letter from the Save Our Cross Committee which pointed out that two traffic management studies and one cross conservation report had been commissioned by the council since 1996, but despite all of these being supportive of reinstatement of the monument, no decision had been taken by the council. The letter reminded the council that, in February 2000, councillors had voted to reinstate the cross as soon as possible. The committee called on the council to pass another vote, requesting the planning department to give the return of the cross immediate priority.
