The Cavan Sinfonia Orchestra performs in the Ramor on 1st June.

Carnival and concerts time on Ramor Theatre stage

'Carnival at Glenaduff', written and directed by Padraic McIntyre, which was first produced in the Ramor Theatre, Virginia, in 2007, is back again for a run from last night (Tuesday) to Saturday 26th May. A poignant love story mixed with music from the big band era is a guarantee of a good night of theatre and music and as they said about the dance halls guaranteed to "send you home sweating." The action is framed around the carnival dance set in the 1960s in Glenaduff, Cavan. The marquee is up. The local boss Man Packie McGovern is chief organiser and the proceeds are going to the local Catholic Church. Fr Flynn, the local parish priest, is there to keep an eye on the proceedings. The dance is about to kick off. The girls are dolled up, the lads are getting a few pints in before the dance and the Boyle Brothers are gunning for John Joe. While the band is in the throes of performing a selection of tunes, a brawl erupts and all hell breaks loose. Add to this mixture some local characters and a love story and you have the essence of what Carnival at Glenaduff is all about. The show features singer John O'Grady, best known to audiences for his appearance in 'The Night Joe Dolan's Car Broke Down' accompanied by alive band featuring Peter Sheridan and Philip Murphy. There are few opportunities to attend such a musical delight as the forthcoming concert by Cavan Sinfonia Orchestra who present 'Hits from the Movies' in the Ramor Theatre on Friday 1st June. Since October 2010 a group of talented musicians has been united under the baton of Sue King as the Cavan Sinfonia Orchestra. This inclusive combination of varying age groups and musical backgrounds means that some whose instruments and skills have lain dormant for a time now have the opportunity to return and join with enthusiastic newcomers in ensemble playing and performance. Their choice of music ranges from jazz to traditional, popular to classical and beyond. Music on the night will feature theme songs from 'Mission Impossible', 'Star Wars', 'Chariots of Fire' and 'Coronation Street'. It will also feature soloists John O'Grady and Tara Kennedy, an 18 year-old singer songwriter from Cavan. She has been performing on the Cavan music scene for two years and she has been writing her own material for years. She has played the Flat Lake Festival in Scotshouse in Monaghan and has also played in The Cafe Sessions in Chapter One in Cavan. Booking for the shows is at the theatre on (049) 854 7074.
