Why no homecoming for Olympic medallist?

Dear sir - Bray Town Council, Westmeath County Council and Belfast City Council, with the co-operation and assistance from associates of the medal-winners, made swift plans to rightly honour the great achievements by our heroes who won medals in the London Olympics. In Bray, the celebrations included live music at the town's bandstand, while other plans included an open-top bus carrying Katie Taylor, along with her coaches, Pete Taylor and Zauri Antia, through the town to the seafront. Further plans included music and entertainment into the evening culminating in a fireworks display. In Mullingar, the plans were for an open-top bus, featuring local boxer and silver medallist John Joe Nevin, led by Mullingar Town Band, to parade through the town from Patrick Street to Cusack Park, where entertainment was laid on in the evening after the formal homecoming ceremony. A similar approach was planned by Belfast City Council with an open-top bus tour on Tuesday through the city centre for the two boxers from Belfast - Michael Conlan and Paddy Barnes. The various councils are to be commended for their actions. However, nearer to home, probably saw the greatest achievement of all when Cian O'Connor, following a wildcard entry on 'Blue Loyd', won a bronze medal in the individual showjumping event, which was extremely competitive - only missing out by the slenderest of margins for a gold. Given that Cian has been based for many years less than 12 kilometers from Navan, right in the heart of Meath, why are there no plans in place by Meath County Council to give the general public the same opportunities to show pride in a major sporting achievement from our area, as have Wicklow, Westmeath and Antrim? Perhaps there are moves in the pipeline that have not as yet been made known to the general public. If not, the relevant authorities should act accordingly and show their appreciation for this great achievement. Yours, Gerry Gorman, The Green, Athlumney, Navan.
