Peadar Curran, Kells There was great sadness following the death of Mr Patrick (Peadar) Curran, St Colmcille's Villas, Kells, at the age of 53. Mr Curran, known as Peader, was widely known as a member of a large Kells family of nine. Having worked with the Carpenter Brothers, Oakley Park for 25 years, he was gifted in the use of machinery and in the preparation of land for various crops. He was highly respected within the farming community of north Meath. He was also gifted with his hands and was a creative and diligent painter. No task was too difficult to take on. The news of his tragic death shocked the entire community of Kells. Large numbers of people from all walks of life, including political parties, sporting organisations and the farming community, gathered to support the Curran family during their time of loss. During his early years, deceased was an active member of the FCA and the Kells champion darts and pool teams and was a distinguished card player. He took an active role in the local Fine Gael party. His remains were received at St Colmcille's Church, Kells by his cousin Fr Matthew Reilly, Dalgan Park and Fr Liam Malone, CC Kells. His funeral mass was concelebrated by Fr Reilly and Fr John Byrne PP, Kells. In his homily, Fr Reilly, spoke of the difficulty of sudden death for a family and he said Peadar's untimely death left many questions unanswered and now was the time for his family to trust in God in the difficult days ahead. Deceased's nephews, with whom he had a great affiliation, carried up the gifts and carried out the readings and prayers of the faithful. Following the funeral mass, his six remaining brothers carried his remains to St Colmcille's Cemetery, where he was laid to rest with his late parents. He was predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Margaret and his sister, Philomena Keating. He is survived by his sons, Patrick and Paul; sister, Sharon; brothers, Seanie, Tommy, Noel, Paul, Oliver and Brian; aunts, uncles and a large circle of friends. ____________________________________________________________ Gertrude Lane, Navan The death of Mrs Gertrude (Gertie) Lane, of St Mary's Park, Navan, on 10th August last, was the source of widespread sadness. She passed away at home, aged 79. Mrs Lane (nee McGrane) was wife of the late Jimmy Lane, who was one of the founders of Simonstown GFC, and she was a unswerving supporter of Simonstown and Meath GAA over the years. A native of Liscarton, Navan, deceased worked as a weaver in Navan Carpets, before meeting her husband, who was a native of Trim and a baker in John Spicer's. A loving mother and grandmother, she loved the simple things in life, gardening and baking, especially at Christmas time, when she delighted in making Christmas cakes for family. A deeply religious person, she never missed Mass and always had her Rosary Beads close at hand. She travelled to Lourdes and Knock and was a subscriber to St Martin magazine. A lifelong member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, Mrs Lane was awarded the silver and gold pins. In full health, she was a great supporter of Simonstown GFC where she attended bingo on Thursday nights. Her late husband, along with Joe Clarke and Jack 'Duck' Callaghan, was a founder members of the club in 1965. Jimmy Lane had been a keen hurler with Trim, winning underage championship medals, along with two senior hurling and a junior All Ireland with Meath in 1948. Their sons, Jim, Paul, David and Sean all represented Simonstown at various levels over the years, and Jim is the present club chairman. In earlier years, Mrs Lane was a regular visitor to Croke Park to see Meath play, and she also had a soft spot for Manchester United. Living in St Mary's Park for over 50 years, her neighbours and friends were joined at her final farewell by members of Simonstown GFC, who provided a guard of honour at her removal and funeral. Predeceased by her husband in July 1980, Mrs Lane is survived by her daughters, Mary Slevin, Navan, Ann Morgan, Naul, Co Dublin, Carol Coogan, Navan, Catherine Maguire, Lobinstown; sons, Jim, Paul, David and Sean, all Navan; sisters, Nancy, Olive and Lilly, Navan, and Eileen, Stackallen; brother, Philip McGrane, Navan; sons-in-law; daughters-in-law; grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. She was predeceased by daughter, Bernie Plunkett, Batterstown. The funeral took place from St Mary's Church to St Mary's Cemetery. A month's mind Mass takes place on Sunday 9th September at 10am in St Oliver's Church, Blackcastle, Navan. ____________________________________________________________ Colm Carrig, Navan Widespread sadness in the Navan area followed the death of Mr Colm Carrig, St Mary's Park, Navan, on 6th August last. Mr Carrig (52) passed away suddenly but peacefully in his sleep at his home. A son of the late Paddy and Josephine Carrig, he was a well-known and popular native of the town, known widely by his nickname, 'Mutley'. Mr Carrig worked for many years as a delivery driver for Spicer's Bakery, Navan. He had a lifelong passion for motorcycles and enjoyed socialising with his many friends. He had many grandnieces and grandnephews and enjoyed spending time with all of them. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Deceased is survived by his sisters, Jacqueline, Navan, and Bernice and Miriam, who both live in north Wales; brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews. The funeral took place from St Mary's Church, Navan, to St Mary's Cemetery, where he was laid to rest beside his late parents. ____________________________________________________________ Anne McDonnell, Navan The passing on 17th August last of Mrs Anne McDonnell (nee McCarthy), The Borallion, Balreask, Navan, at the age of 80, was a source of widespread sorrow to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. A native of Buffana, Fethard, Co Tipperary, she was a daughter of late late John and Mary McCarthy. She was a very caring and gentle woman who always had her door open for everyone and did not let them leave until their tummies were full. She had a love of sport and music, especially the Tipperary hurling team and the late Joe Dolan. Mrs McDonnell's character was outstanding and she regularly gave to charities such as Crumlin Children's Hospital and Beaumont Hospital. Her remarkable personality and presence will be truly missed by all. Deceased is survived by her husband, James; son, Richard (Scobie), and grandson, Laurence, Borallion, Balreask, Navan; sisters, Monica O'Mara, Magorban, Tipperary; Rita Critchley, Cabragh, Tara, and Brenda Cahill; granddaughters, Louise and Chloe Cahill, Blackcastle Lodge, Navan; nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by her son, Padlo; brothers, Jim and Richard; Brother Vincent and Brother Austin; sister, Tess Dee, Tipperary; Sr Rita, Sr Joseph and Sr Vincent of the Ursuline Sisters, Connecticut, USA. The funeral took place from St Mary's Church, Navan, to St Mary's Cemetery.
