Philip and Eva Dunne, Kells

 

There was widespread shock and great sadness following the recent passings of Mr Philip Dunne, Cakestown, Kells, and his wife, Eva, within nine days of each other.
Mr Dunne died unexpectedly at Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, on 24th January last, while Mrs Dunne, who had been ill for some time, died at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, on 2nd February.
Philip Dunne was a native of Maudlin Bridge, Kells, and was son of the late James and Bridget Dunne. He was aged 82. He was a beef farmer, actively involved in the running of the family farm up to his sudden death following a short illness. He had a great nature and love for cattle and sheep, and adored his collie dog, Penny. He also enjoyed horseracing, and loved to go away on holidays, especially when the weather was good.
He was married to Eva Blake for almost 53 years. She was a native of Crewbane, Slane, and was aged 89. Mrs Dunne, like her husband, was a caring parent and grandparent. She was an active and popular member of Kells Bridge Club, where she made many friends.
Mr and Mrs Dunne are survived by their daughter, Marie Morgan, Cakestown; son-in-law, Paul; grandsons, Philip and Jonathan; Philip’s sister, Jenny Ryan, Knockglass, Kells; his brother, Billy, and sister, Mary, Maudlin Farm, Kells; sister-in-law, Helen, Belfast; nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. Mrs Dunne was the last surviving member of the family of George and Brigid Blake.
The funerals took place from the Church of the Sacred Heart, Mullaghea, Kells, to St Colmcille’s Cemetery, Kells.  Monsignor John Hanly, PP, Carnaross, was assisted by Fr John Byrne, PP, Kells. A month’s memory Mass for the deceased couple takes place in Mullaghea Church on Sunday 7th April.

Margaret Jordan, Navan

Mrs Margaret Jordan, Abbey Grove, Navan, who died on 24th February last, was a member of the Tuite family of Rahoney, Athboy. Aged 73, she passed away at Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan.
Daughter of the late John and Teresa Tuite, she is survived by her husband, Jimmy Jordan; son, John; daughter, Anne; son-in-law, Steve; brother, Edward; sisters-in-law, Anne and Josephine; brother-in-law, Bernard; nephews and nieces. The funeral took place from St Mary’s Church, Navan, to Rathmore Cemetery.

James Sheridan, Moynalty

Moynalty bade farewell to centenarian Mr James (Jimmy) Sheridan on Monday, when he was laid to rest in his local cemetery.
He died on Saturday last, in his 102nd year, and family, friends and neighbours gathered on Sunday evening, when he was reposing at McEntee’s Funeral Home in Kells, before removal to the Church of the Assumption, Moynalty, and on Monday, for his funeral Mass there.
He celebrated his 100th birthday in August 2011, and recalled then in a Meath Chronicle interview how, as a connoisseur of high fashion back in the 1950s, he had earned himself a nice new motor car at a time when such a vehicle was a rarity in rural Ireland.
He had correctly picked the winners of a style parade in a Sunday newspaper in 1958, and as a result, became proud owner of an Austin A35. 'Jimmy Dan’, as he was popularly known locally, was quite the celebrity around north Meath then, and was once again that August when he celebrated his 100th birthday.
He was a nifty man in his youth, winning a competition for Irish dancing and an able performer of the hornpipe.
Deceased was a farm steward on De Stacpoole’s farm at Walterstown, Moynalty, close to where he was born, and he and his wife Josephine Duffy made their family home at Donore, between Moynalty and Kells.
He died there peacefully at the weekend. Mr Sheridan is survived by his wife, Josephine; son, Donal; daughters, Mary, and Breda Tully; son-in-law, John; grandchildren, Eimear, Johnny, Sinead, Aine, Patrick and Aoife; sister-in-law; cousins; relatives and friends.

Elizabeth Owens, Kilmainhamwood

There was great sadness over a wide area following the death of Mrs Elizabeth (Lily) Owens (nee Farrelly) of Ervey, Kilmainhamwood, Kells, on 24th February last at Kilmainhamwood Nursing Home. Aged 94, she was a native of Mullagh, and had been living in Ervey for 80 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Francie, in May 2007.
Deceased is survived by her sons, Francie, Tommy, Mickey, Paul, Dom, Seán, Declan and Séamie; daughters-in-law; 25 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass took place in The Church of the Immaculate Conception, Kingscourt on Tuesday 26th February, followed by burial in Kingscourt Cemetery.

Sarah Fitzsimons, Oldcastle

The regretted death occurred of Mrs Sarah (Sadie) Fitzsimons (nee Walsh) of Gortloney, Dromone, Oldcastle, at the Mater Private Hospital on 10th February last.
A native of Ballinacree, Oldcastle, she was the daughter of James and Annie Walsh. She had a love of gardening and walking and was also a talented singer.
Deceased is survived by her husband, Eamon; daughters, Caroline and Karen; sons, Cyril and Eamon Jnr; grandchildren Sorcha, Caoimhe, Naoise, Rían and Caelín; brothers, Ned and Frank; sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; best friend Sally; and extended family.
The funeral Mass took place in St Mary’s Church, Moylagh, celebrated by Fr Ray Kelly, PP, and Fr Robert McCabe, Army Chaplain. A month’s memory Mass will take place on Sunday 24th March at 10am in St Mary’s Church, Moylagh.

Joe Earley, Dunderry

The regretted death took place peacefully on 16th February last of Mr Joe Earley, Meadstown, Dunderry, at his sister Fiona’s residence in Skryne.
A native of Roscommon, deceased was a cattle dealer and a very familiar face at many of the cattle marts throughout the country. He was predeceased by his father Paul, on 21st December last, and by his mother Trena, in 1994.
Mr Earley was a devoted father to Emma and Adam. He loved nothing more than to spend time with them and to bring them to help him on the farm. He died following a short illness, and was very determined throughout his illness. He was cared on occasions by the wonderful staff of Navan Hospital, where he got exceptional treatment by all staff members, by his GPs and also the wonderful staff of Meath Palliative Care.
He is survived by his daughter Emma (9), and son Adam (5), Wicklow; sisters, Suzanne Greene, New York, and Fiona O’Connor, Skryne; brothers-in-law, Kenneth and Aidan; nieces, Caitriona and Aisling; nephews, Ciaran, Shane and Declan, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
The funeral took place from St Colmcille’s Church, Skryne to Kentstown Cemetery. A month’s memory Mass will be held in Skryne Church on Monday 18th March, at 11am.

Corby Hoey, Wilkinstown

North Meath and the Navan area is in shock this week following the sudden death of Mr Corby Hoey, the well-known builder and pub owner, of Arch Hall, Wilkinstown.
Mr Hoey, of CF Hoey Construction, was aged 46 and died at Navan Hospital on Monday after taking ill suddenly on Saturday.
His company was well known as sponsor of the Castletown GFC team for many years, and also for many building projects, both private and public, across the county.
A carpenter by trade, he began his career with Sean McCabe’s building company and then established his own firm, which became renowned for its quality of work.
Current projects included the reconstruction of St Ultan’s Terrace for Navan Town Council, and Stackallen School which was recently completed.
He also owned a number of pubs, building up Corby’s of Carlanstown, a pub and retail unit, as well as the Lacken Inn in Rathkenny, both of which were leased out.
A keen follower of GAA, he also enjoyed horse racing.
Predeceased in October 2010 by his father Paddy, and by his sister, Eva Egan, and brother-in-law, Tom Flynn, he is survived by his wife Kathleen; sons, Francis and Robert; daughter, Catherine; mother, Ann; brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He will be reposing at his residence, Arch Hall, on Thursday from 2pm, with removal on Friday morning at 11.15am to St Colmcille’s Church, Fletcherstown, for funeral Mass at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in Fletcherstown Cemetery. House private, Friday morning. Family flowers only. Donations if desired to ICU Unit, Navan Hospital.
