O'Connor drama to aid Jack Kavanagh fund
Dunshaughlin Players spring production is 'Red Roses and Petrol’ by Joseph O’Connor, directed by the Mary Tuite. The play is being staged this week, until Saturday, in the Solstice Theatre, Navan, with all profits go to the Jack Kavanagh Trust Fund. Writer Joe O’Connor has kindly agreed to forgo his royalties for the fund for the Dunshaughlin lad who broke his neck simply diving into a wave on a beach last year.
In 'Red Roses and Petrol’ Moya is at home in Dublin preparing for the funeral mass of her husband, Enda. From England and America, her children arrive for the sombre occasion. But as the ghosts of the Doyle family’s past begin to materialise, the consequences are both profoundly disturbing and memorably comic. Family members, provoked by each other, peel back layer upon layer of unpredictable secrets in a domino effect of revelations.
Niall Brennan who plays Tom and young Enda is from Kilmessan and is a former student of Dunshaughlin Community College. He starred in a one act play with the Dunshaughlin Players for their 'Comedy at The Arch’ in December 2008. He also starred in other productions of 'Big Maggie’ and 'The Dumb Waiter’. He studied English and drama and is now teaching English as a foreign language.
Christine Hynes who plays Catherine and Young Moya is also former graduate of Dunshaughlin Community College. She participated in drama societies in secondary and third level education, wrote and directed two plays for Please Talk Week in DCU. She was cast in a female rendition of 'The Odd Couple’ for a master’s showcase in Smock Alley in Dublin.
Patricia Ronayne, who plays Moya, is native of Navan. Patricia stared in several one act comedies at The Arch and directed a piece for Dunshaughlin players, yet she is remembered for her performance as the 'Stripping Granny’ in the Geraldine Aron’s 'Same old Moon’ back in 2011!
Emily Duignan who plays Medbh is from Navan, and is a primary school teacher, working in Slane. This is her first year with the Dunshaughlin Players, having played the part of Flick in 'The Wedding Dance’ as part of the Dunshaughlin Harvest Festival in September.
Sean O’Boyle who plays Johnny take spart in his first production with Dunshaughlin Players but he has been involved in local drama groups for many years. His first introduction to drama was in the Dunshaughlin Community College. Sean was then with Smashing Times Theatre Company for six years where he toured secondary schools around the country along with performances in the Helix and other theatres in Dublin. Sean also enjoyed his time with local drama group, Oddball Productions.
Kieran Rushe who plays Enda is a founder member of Dunshaughlin Players. His previous acting roles with the players include the hiker in 'The Year of the Hiker’, Paddy in 'I Do Not Like Thee Dr Fell’, and 'Finbar in The Weir’, Desmond Barnes in 'Same Old Moon’ and Sharky in 'The Seafarer’, amongst other small one acts one act plays and monologues in Comedy at the Arch.
The Jack Kavanagh Trust was set up in March 2013 to raise funds for Jack, from Moortown, Dunshaughlin, who suffered a C4/C5 spinal injury which means that he has no feeling below his upper chest, has limited use of his arms, and no use of his hands or fingers.
