Kenlis Place has a new look

Kells Local Heroes kicked off their first painting and cleaning day for 2013 on Saturday last when volunteers turned out in force to give Kenlis Place or Back Street, as it’s known locally, a colourful make-over.
Eight buildings were each given fresh coats of green, blue, terracotta, yellow, pink and beige paint in an operation that has given a colourful transformation to the busy street.
“Work got underway at 9am on Saturday morning and our dedicated team of volunteers spent the entire day painting assigned buildings. The result has been remarkable,” said Kells Local Heroes chairman, Ken Murray.
“What we did on Saturday has created a new kaleidoscope of colour on the street and we’re not finished yet.”
The response by locals has been remarkable.
“The new colours have created a buzz and the good news is we will continue the work over the coming weeks.”
Kells Local Heroes have been making productive use of five Tus workers on their projects who have been seconded to them via the Meath Partnership Programme.
A major works plan is underway to brighten up a number of buildings that require a fresh look as Kells prepares for the Hay-on Wye Book Festival which take place in the town on the weekend of 28th June next.
Among the celebrity writers confirmed so far to attend are John Banville and DBC Pierre.
“We’d like to thank all the local councillors, volunteers and local businesses who got out their painting brushes last Saturday as well as the team in  Margaret’s Restaurant, The Pain Remedial Clinic and Cross Street Bistro for providing hospitality and refreshments for all,” said Mr Murray.
