Hurlers win in Christy Ring Cup

Meath advanced to the quarter-finals of the Christy Ring Cup with a hard-earned victory over Armagh at Trim today in front of a paltry crowd.

Meath won by 1-20 to 2-10, but trailed by 0-6 to 1-7 at the interval after playing against the wind.

However, Armagh grabbed ane arly second-half goal and were ahead by 2-10 to 0-13 with 12 minutes remaining.

Barry Slevin's goal was just what Meath needed and they pushed on from there for a merited but unimpressive victory.

Kildare recorded a 1-23 to 0-15 win over Mayo at Newbridge after elading by 0-12 to 0-8 at the break.

Kerry negotiated Down at Newry by 3-16 to 2-17 after leading by 2-12 to 1-8 at the interval while hosts Derry had to work hard for victory over Wicklow by 1-11 to 1-10.

Meath, Kerry, Derry and Kildare go into the quarter-finals next weekend while Armagh, Mayo, Wicklow and Down will play-off for two quarter-final places against the losers of next week's two quarter-finals.
