Trim Celtic prove best in shoot-out
They took the scenic route but it was Trim Celtic who progressed to the last 16 of the Leinster Junior Cup when they defeated MDL rivals Navan Cosmos in a penalty shoot-out at Tully Park today.
The sides finished level 3-3 at the end of extra-time and in the shoot-out it was the home who prevailed, 6-5.
The howling wind was a big factor in this game with all the goals scored at the dresssing rooms end of the ground.
The team defending those goals had to deal with the wind blowing into their faces as well as the opposition attack.
Trim Celtic prevailed despite having Craig Peppard red-carded on 63 minutes after he picked up a second yellow.
It was Cosmos who steamed into a 2-0 lead at the break in normal time with goals from Conor Woods and Mark McCabe.
Within the opening two minutes of the second-half Trim Celtic equalised when Ian Keenan netted twice in quick succession.
McCabe gave Cosmos the lead in extra-time before Mark Leavy again hauled Trim Celtic level with a stinging effort from out on the left.
It was onto the penalties. Trim Celtic goalkeeper Danny Connell superbly saved one penalty while his Cosmos counterpart Eoin Feeley also dived to block a spot-kick.
However Trim Celtic proved more accurate and won 6-5 in the shoot-out.
