Keane off the mark at Dundalk

Meath jockey Colin Keane got 2014 off to a good start with a winner at Dundalk on Friday night as he bids to improve on last year when he partnered 35 winners which included a big success in the Topaz Handicap at the Galway Festival for Kiltale-based trainer Ger Lyons with Brendan Brackan.

At Dundalk it was a more modest race as the Trim jockey won a handicap with Maontri for Tipperary handler Matt Tynan.

Keane produced the seven-year-old well bred daughetr of Catcher In The Rye to lead in the home straight and win by a substantial seven and a half lengths.

Although the winner is seven, she has only raced six times and was winning for the first time after making her debut in a Clonmel bumper two years ago.

She seems to like the surface at Dundalk as on her first appearance at the Louth track last November she finished third for Johnny Murtagh and may return to Dundalk for another race over the next few weeks.
