Easy for Meath in Kehoe Cup opener

Meath had 35 points to spare against St Patrick’s (Dublin) in this opening round of the Kehoe Cup at Trim today where the Royals won by 5-30 to 1-7.

Meath went into this game “a little behind where they wanted to be” in terms of preparation, but there was nothing in the performance to suggest any major deficiencies.

Meath were ahead by 3-13 to 0-5 at the interval against a team that was back-boned by seven Kilkenny players in the starting 15, Meath’s James Kelly was alo in the mix for the students.

There was much to admiire about the way Meath approached this game and the pace at which they played with quick puck-outs and frees a factor in many scores.
Peter Durnin finished with 3-8 to his credit and Meath’s other goals came from Adam Gannon and Patrick Conneely.

Durnin sent over eight points while Conneely added five, all from play, James Toher (four) with three apiece from Darren Reilly, Eoin Marsh and Derek Doran.
The remainder were well-takes scores from Gary Kelly (two), Gannon and Willie McGrath.


Meath will play Wicklow in a quarter-final next week after the Garden County negotiated Mayo by 3-18 to 3-11.
