Gillespie hoping for success

Conor Gillespie has only played in half of Meath’s O’Byrne Cup games, but he could be forgiven if he was allowed to skip the whole campaign as he played right up to the end of November with Summerhill reaching the Leinster Club SFC semi-final.
However, Gillespie is always keen to play and despite only featuring in the wins over DIT and Wicklow the Summerhill man acknowledges that it is good to be involved in a final and he appreciates that Sunday’s test against Kildare will stand Meath in good stead ahead of the league campaign.
“When we set out on the O’Byrne Cup we knew we wanted to get at least four games. We wanted to start getting our performances going and getting as many games as possible before the start of the league,” Gillespie told the Meath Chronicle.
“Getting to the final is great and there is now more on the line, especially against Kildare who are going well at the moment. We are happy to be getting good preparation before the start of the league.
“The standard of opposition in the O’Byrne Cup wasn’t great because we played three college teams and an under-strength Wicklow side so this will be a big step up to face Kildare who have hammered everyone out of sight.
“We have had very intense internal competition going on within the panel with players working hard trying to compete for starting places for the league. Kildare have a new manager and they have players looking to impress him and establish their places. So you will have two teams that will bring their own intensity and hopefully that will mean a good game.”
